im back...again
...but this time well rested, well fed, and most importantly, showered!
so again, hawaii was a good run. the trip was much needed. so where in hawaii did i go? i went to lihue which is found on the island of kuai (its the oldest island and also has the lowest population) kuai is called the 'garden island'. its all small towns, farm land, lots of trees and mountains. its the total opposite of maui, which has a very high population, and a very big modern city. there are small resorts scattered throughout the island, with none of the big hotel chains. this is great because i really wanted to get away from the city.
so the first thing that hit me, when i first step foot on hawaii was the weather. i kid you not, it was a solid 30deg everyday with clear skies and a nice crisp little breeze. it wasnt the nasty toronto 30deg where its incredibly hot, muggy, humid, sticky and polluted! this weather was amazing. clean and refreshing.
there was a lot to do there, yet we still had a lot of time to just sit around and relax. going on boat rides, helicopters, snorkeling, riding around on atv's was just some of the stuff i did. but my favorite thing to do was just to sit on the beach, my feet in the sand, staring out into the water, strumming on the guitar. ahhh yess. that was the shizzzznit right there.
the vibe there is so awesome. everyone is extremly friendly. nobody has got a sour attitude like a lot of people here in TO. that is one of the things that i really miss.
there are a lot of filipinos kauai. its funny because everywhere we turned, i could hear someone speaking tagalog. a lot people thought that my fam and i were locals -- i wish!
being in hawaii, i listened to a lot of hawaiian native jack johnson. i never really gave jack johnson a chance but after giving him a lot of listens, he has really given me a new outlook on his music. he is a really talented guitar player with some very good and positive lyrics. so natrually i had to learn some of his tunes. its so mellow and easy going. beautiful stuff.
i picked up two hawaiian music cd's. i have been listening to it constantly. one of the cds is a trio of guys called UA. unfortunatly, there is not much about them on the web as they are not really know worldwide. this cd i am really loving. its not guitar heavy as you might assume, but rather pays homage to the golden era of hawaiian music by taking very classic hawaiian songs and adding in modern musical styles. these guys have great singing voices.
the other cd that i got was this japanese ukelele player, name Jake Shimabukuro. again, he takes some classic hawaiian songs and jazz's them up. he doesnt sing. its all instrumental. i never knew you could create so many different sounds with a ukelele.
the one thing that wasnt fun was the travelling too and from hawaii. it was more or less a full day of travelling for both going there and coming home. between all the flying, sitting waiting for connecting flights, sleeping and eating at odd hours, it was definetly the crappy end of the stick. but definetly well worth it!
i think i have written quite enough. this is probably my longest post ever! usually they span about 2 or 3 lines. but anyways, this hawaii trip was amazing and i definetly recommend that you go if you can. if you ever run into a certain someone who says that hawaii has no culture and is just corporate america, do not listen! that person is a jackass! :)
